Opencast is a term to describe audio and video content, primarily in an academic context. It combines the terms "Open" for Open Source and/or Open Access and "Broadcast". The term has been coined in the context of the Opencast Community and the Opencast Matterhorn project. == Opencast Community == The Opencast Community was initiated by UC Berkeley in 2007 to gather academic institutions, individuals and companies interested in the production, management and distribution of academic audio and video content. Communication around related issues happens on the homepage and via the mailinglist.〔http://www.opencastproject.org/community_mailing_list〕 Goals of the Opencast Community are described in the mission statement.〔http://www.opencastproject.org/mission_statement〕 The most prominent project under the hood of the Opencast Community is the Opencast Matterhorn build project. The Matterhorn project stems from the Opencast Community in that 13 institutions from North America and Europe initiated a cooperation to build an Open Source software to produce, manage and distribute academic audio and video content, especially lecture recordings. Matterhorn is supposed to bring about an easy-to-use chain of software components to automate the related process. The project is supposed to combine the individual solutions and focus the efforts and experience of different universities in one shared open product. The creation of a unified system with an open development process is projected to foster the exchange of educational content also. The Opencast Matterhorn project receives funding from the Hewlett Foundation and the Andrew W.
